What Is Amygdalin?

Amygdalin, commonly called Laetrile, is an alternative cancer treatment that is made from the pits of apricots and other fruits. The drug is given by intravenous injection or by pill. Amygdalin is not approved by the FDA and its use and sale is banned in the United States. According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, amygdalin is not effective in treating cancer and even has negative side effects in some patients and could even result in death by cyanide poisoning.

Dual diagnosis means that a patient has a drug or alcohol addiction along with a psychiatric or emotional disorder. Many times an emotional disorder, such as depression, may cause a person to seek alcohol or drugs as an escape. This creates what psychologists call a dual diagnosis. Many psychologists and psychiatrists believe that in order to treat the drug or alcohol addiction, you also need to treat the psychiatric disorder. There are rehabilitation facilities that focus on both aspects of the disorder.

About 30 years ago the pharmaceutical industry lobbied the F.D.A. in the U.S. to prevent the sale of "raw" apricot seeds in the U.S.. It's been said and apparently proven that the vitamin B-17 in apricot seeds can actually rid the body of cancer cells, including those in the brain. I see why the pharmaceutical industry wouldn't like this since they'd profit nothing from this. What are your experiences with Vitamin B-17 and treating cancer.

Sorry, it has not been proved at all! If it had NO ONE would be able to stop it from being used! After all raw apricot seeds are right now being used here in my native Sweden as a cheap substitute for almonds for making marzipan for a popular kind of bakery product at this time of the year called in Swedish semla. So their use would indeed be impossible to stop. It is not being used because that notion is a myth without foundation in reality. Sorry! However raw apricot seeds CAN contain cyanide (just as bitter almonds do) which indeed is a deadly poison (used in gas chambers for executions) so their use should be practiced with caution. I believe THAT fact was what really mattered to the FDA!

Laetrile is an alternative treatment for cancer, using a naturally occurring substance found in the kernels of almonds, apricots and peaches. It is believed that this substance can kill cancer cells, while remaining harmless to healthy cells in the body.

An early form of the use of laetrile dates back thousands of years ago to the early Egyptians. The form of treatment used today began in the 1920's when Dr. Ernst T. Krebs, Sr. performed tests using the pits from apricots. At that time, the tests proved a toxin too harmful to be administered.
How To Remove Amygdalin From Apricot Kernels?

Amygdalin -- a naturally occurring substance typically found in the kernels of certain fruits and nuts, including apricots -- is thought to be beneficial in some cancer treatments. It's not just apricot seeds from which amygdalin can be extracted; the pits of many fruits, raw nuts and plants also contain the chemical. Since heat destroys the cyanide toxin found in amygdalin, you can bake apricot kernels to remove the unwanted content. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake the apricot kernels for 10 minutes. Remove the kernels from the oven and allow them to cool to room temperature.

There may be a way to cure cancer that doesn't destroy your health or force you into bankruptcy. In 1952, Dr. Ernst Krebs, Jr. from San Francisco wanted to find the ingredient that's missing from people's diets, The Hunzas, a primitive tribe, do not have cancer. Krebs discovered they eat a compound called amagdylin, also called laetrile or B17.

The highest concentration of amygdalin is in apricot seed kernels. To get to these soft kernels you have to break through the hard exterior.

The Latin translation for apricot is "precious," which is a fitting title for this supple, soft fruit. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, apricots originated in China, although today almost 95 percent of the world's supply is grown in California. Eating an apricot involves choosing the best candidate and allowing the fruit to ripen to its full potential before enjoying it whole or serving it in a variety of recipes, from pies to ice cream treats. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Choose an apricot that is golden in color and is free of bruises or blemishes. An apricot that is pale yellow or slightly green and hard is under-ripe. To ripen an apricot, place it into a paper bag for up to two days. Check the apricot periodically during this time and press gently on the fruit with your finger. When the fruit is no longer hard and gives slightly to the pressure of your finger, it is ripe and ready to be consumed.

How much laetrile/amygdalin/B17 is in a seed?

Does anyone know how many milligrams of laetrile are in an apricot seed? What about loquat seeds? I’ve seen recommendations of 12-40 apricot seeds, but if it really is a proper treatment, then it should be known how much is in each seed so that the proper dosages can be monitored and regulated.

I think you will use Soxhlet extraction technique to extract the organic compounds into a solvent first. Then apply a chromatographic technique like ordinary column chromatography (which I do not recommend for such a complex mixture) or high performance liquid chromatography with preferably UV detection.
